New virtual race combines two of life's wonderful pastimes: running and eating butter tarts
Canada's Marathon Mom, runner Krista Duchene said it all, when she appeared on a local news broadcast talking about the virtual races offerings from VR Pro Races, namely the annual Butter Tart 5K and 10K.
“It’s great to support this organization, and when anyone mentions butter tarts, I’m going to be listening,” she said. “I definitely love butter tarts and running, so it’s great to see this.”
The race is virtual this year, and participants can register now and run the event by Aug. 30.
Last year, even before the “new normal” the virtual edition of the popular Butter Tart 5K and 10K sold out almost immediately. This year, the team has a 5K as well as a new 10K option. Race entry includes a T-shirt, medal, race bib, and, of course, a butter tart if your kit is delivered, or butter tart-decorated cookie if your kit is shipped.
It is one of a number of virtual race offerings from the Vr Pro team including their Canada Day race and the COVID Run, which has raised more than $35,000 for local hospitals.
“At this time when we have to social distance to avoid the spread and our real races have been cancelled, we can still all go out and run or walk and train,” says Arnott. “Goals are so important and therefore having something substantial to work towards like your first 5K or 10K.”
It’s no surprise that virtual runs have become so popular, not just because events are being cancelled due to the pandemic, but also because of the sense of community they can create. At least, if they are fostered the right way. And that seems to be Arnott’s speciality. Community.
“I think all the years that I was in retail and developed personal relationships with so many customers that would just like to connect,” she explains. “Our VR Pro world is much the same but even stronger these days and our runners have been so happy to be able to share their workouts and feelings. This has been very therapeutic for all of us to be together on this journey.”
The VR Pro team was on the news recently alongside Duchene, who placed third at the 2018 Boston Marathon and 35th at the 2016 Olympic Games, to talk about virtual racing and the great lineup of summer races available from the race team behind such popular races as the Chilly Half Marathon and others.
“It’s great to be a part of Vr Pro, and Kelly (VR Pro co-founder Kelly Arnott) has been great,” Duchene said. “It’s a wonderful organization and the Chilly Half race I’ve done for many years. It’s well-organized and the community is wonderful.”
