In other news…
Following the success of last summer's inaugural Saab Salomon Mountain-X Race in the French Alps, this year's race returns July 21-26 -- and a team of three has the chance to win a free entry and travel package to compete! Co-ed or open threesomes must particpate in two qualifying events: the Giant's Rib Raid, a 25K adventure run on April 12 (200 racers allowed), and Storm the Trent, an eight-hour multisport race on May 10 (with 500 racers). The winning team will be sent to Savoie Mont Blanc to trail run, mountain bike, paddle, swim and climb. Stay tuned for more info at a website to be launched soon; in the meantime, visit the race websites and Salomon Canada.
For competitors who will race the 5Peaks trail run this April 26 at Horseshoe Valley, they can participate in a Shave-a-thon beforehand to suppor the Canadian Cancer Society's Barrie & District Unit. More details to follow in an upcoming GOT Report.
March 1st is the deadline to apply for the Rock Solid Leadership 2008 course that will be held from June 20 to 27 at Jasper National Park, AB. You’ll focus on hard and soft skills for leading rock climbing trips of almost any grade. The $1,650 fee includes instruction, a course manual, meals, accommodation and GST. For more info, contact Sandra Bowkun at rsl@climbers.org.
If your iPod playlist isn't cutting it while you exercise, the New York Times gives suggestions to maximize your workout music. The tempo of a song should match your heart rate during exercise--120 to 140 beats per minute (BPM)--about as fast as most commercial dance music and many rock songs. Stroll walkers should listen to a remixed track that's 115 to 118 BPM in tempo; a power walker should have music that's 137 to 139 BPM; and a runner should boost the BPM to 147 to 160. Try remixed sets if you're doing cardio because there are no pauses between tracks. And for high-intensity runners? Glenn Frey's "The Heat is On" should do the trick.

Robbie Burns 8K Race Report
The memory of Robbie Burns was observed along Burlington streets in the 29th running of the Robbie Burns 8 km Road Race. This year’s run was held on January 27th, just 2 days after the Scottish barid’s birthday. A tartan-clad piper kicked off the race and the post-race breakfast – hot porridge of course – was ladled out after the race.

The event marked the start of the City of Burlington’s Family Winter Carnival and supports the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton Region. This is the only mid-winter race in the region and the certified 8 km distance was a test of each runner’s mid-winter fitness.
The real winner this year is the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton. Last year the race donated $4,000 for this worthy cause and the goal this year is to surpass it.
Every pre-registered entry received a tartan backpack. It’s a unique gift that is very popular with the runners.
The top Burlington male runner was Stephen Miller with a time of 27:10 which placed him 12th overall and 2nd in his age group. Top Burlington female runner was Helen Hadcock with a time of 35:14 which placed her 5th in her age group.
Josephat Ongeri, Hamilton won the race with a time of 24:14, narrowly beating Derek Nakluski, Kitchener by only 2 sconds. This is Josephat’s second win in 4 weeks. He triumphed at the Boxing Day 10 Miler held last month in Hamilton.
