Moraine for Life Adventure Relay Race Report. The second annual Moraine for Life Adventure Relay crowned a new set of winners this year. Here's the post-race report.

(Team 7 Systems celebrates their win)

An already hot day got hotter last Saturday (June 14th) as 22 teams tackled the 160km Moraine For Life Adventure Relay, supporting The Oak Ridges Trail Association (ORTA).
Active weather hit the entire route the night before, with lingering effects setting the stage for race day. A demanding 8km paddle into headwinds and whitecaps on Rice Lake kicked off the challenging course. Downed trees, deep mud puddles, wet sand, hot sun, muggy air, poison ivy and good ol’ mosquitoes threw extra challenges at the racers as they continued along the Oak Ridges Trail by foot and bike.
Expectations were high in all categories. 17 teams vied for glory in the largest and most hotly contested Recreational Mixed (all ages) field. 2007 Elite challengers Team 7 Systems and mynextrace.com went head to head once again. The new Masters (55+) category saw ORTA’s Sand Spinners face The Millbrook Masters. In the Corporate category, Sanofi Pasteur’s team Run Like the Dengue clinched their win with no competition, but ran like there was. “The pre-race banter among the teams really set up the challenge we all faced, but the fun we also knew we would have”, commented ORTA Ridge Racers team member, Judith Reda.
Personal milestones also highlighted the event. One member of Team Points North marked her 70th birthday, while Team We Do It Outdoors’ captain awaited the birth of his 3rd child. Team 7 Systems featured the 2008 World Amateur Triathlon Champion.
Meet the teams by visiting www.moraineadventure.com and clicking on UPDATES.
As the race moved on, clear leaders emerged but the field never flagged while fresh racers took up the challenge to keep the momentum going strong.
Volunteer checkpoint staff also kept the racers’ spirits up while tracking official timings along the route. Adventure Relay participation tripled from 2007, and volunteer capacity needed to keep pace. ORTA members, friends and family answered the call. ORTA Executive Director, Harold Sellers, remarked “Our checkpoint volunteers were welcome sights as racers charged in giving their all. We owe so much of the day’s success to them.”
With the sun still high, race leaders hit the home stretch to ORTA’s headquarters in King City. Breaking the tape first was Toronto’s Team 7 Systems, shattering their 2007 finish with a 10 hour, 41 minute Overall and Elite win. ORTA’s very own Ridge Racers came home in 12 hours and 30 minutes for 2nd place Overall and the Recreational Mixed victory. The Millbrook Masters followed not long after in 13 hours and 1 minute, claiming 3rd place Overall and Masters glory.
As darkness enveloped the route, safety in numbers ruled over individual pace, as 4 teams set off together through Stage 13 towards Aurora’s Sheppard’s Bush Conservation Area. "One of the most exhilarating moments was close to midnight. 4 little blue lights came weaving and bobbing through the bush and as many as 50 friends, teammates and volunteers cheered the cyclists in", noted the checkpoint’s captain, Peter Schaefer.
A vocal crowd of supporters at ORTA HQ grew by the hour as racers crossed the finish line until about 1am, greeted by a rousing celebration of a truly Olympic-worthy effort all around.
“The 2008 Relay was an enormous success in all respects, from raising awareness to raising needed funds for ORTA. But the most satisfaction comes from seeing the hundreds of racers and volunteers enjoying the challenge, the outdoors, the trail and working together so well”, Mr. Sellers commented.
With many teams declaring their return in 2009, ORTA looks ahead to the 3rd Annual Moraine For Life Adventure Relay.
The Moraine for Life Adventure Relay is designed to bring awareness to the moraine’s environmentally significant landscape. All proceeds will help the Oak Ridges Trail Association protect the Moraine's healthy habitat, ecosystem and heritage, extend the Oak Ridges Trail and encourage responsible land use. www.moraineadventure.com

Featured Event: Best Fest, Saturday, July 12 at Buckwallow
This news item courtesy of Mike Badyk. Thanks for alerting us to this important event Mike.
Many of you in the Ontario MTB world know Jim Best. He races. He built bikes and did repairs at his home shop Best Bike Works. He wrenched at lots of events with his trailer as well. He is also an IMBA regional rep and has done lots of good work helping with trails. Besides that he's just a great person.
Jim has been having some health problems. They are in fact serious. He has been diagnosed with MS. Lots of people know about this now but many don't. It seems that the type of medical assistance that Jim is seeking isn't covered by OHIP (diet advice, naturopathy) therefore there is quite the financial burden for Jim and his family.
Jim's good friend Gord Wyatt, Jim's bike club - the MAMBO Kings, Buckwallow Cycling Centre, Cycle Solutions and Ecclestone Cycle are getting together for a ride to raise funds for Jim's treatments on Saturday July 12th at Buckwallow. Response has been so strong that it has morphed into what is being affectionately called "BEST FEST". There are rides between 10 and 1, food, music, pottery demos, draw prizes (see below) and probably more as well. Park entry is $8.
The main part of the fundraising effort is a raffle. Tickets are $5.00 each and if you buy 5 tickets you get a 6th for free. Tickets are available at both Cycle Solutions stores (Beaches and Parliament), and also through Paypal (link available soon). Please contact bonner@sympatico.ca for more info about the raffle. Other raffle prizes will be added to the list by July 12th. Please note that you don't have to be at the event to win but we'd love to see you there to offer Jim as much encouragement as we possibly can. Ticket draws will be done at Buckwallow. You can also make a voluntary donation at Best Fest.
Here's a partial list of the raffle prizes.
1st prize - 2007 Gary Fisher Tassajhara GS XC bike valued at $1300.00 2nd Prize - 2 tickets to Toronto F.C. soccer game (their 2008 season is sold out) 3rd - Syndicate signed jersey 4th - 5th Michelin XCR dry tires (2.6 x 2.0) 6th - 16th XT rear derailleurs (that's right...10 derailleurs) 17th - Cycle Solutions Jersey - 3/4 Length 18th - Cycle Solutions short sleeve jersey
This is our chance to help out someone who has done so much for mountain biking in Ontario. Best Fest isn't affiliated with anything or anyone.
Its just friends helping a friend. We hope you can be part of it.
Buckwallow Cycling Centre is located 4km north of Gravenhurst. Turn right from Hwy 11 North (Gravenhurst Parkway) onto Reay Road East near the KOA.
