Terry Fox has made the shortlist to appear on the next $5 bill in Canada

The shortlist has been finalized to name who appears on the next $5 bill and amongst the eight nominees is legendary Canadian runner and hero Terry Fox.

The nominations were open for a few months and garnered more than 600 names. In addition to Fox, there are seven Canadians who appear on the shortlist including Inuit artist Pitseolak Ashoona and French-Canadian journalist Robertine Barry (“Françoise”)

Terry Fox is a beloved Canadian icon. In 1980, already having lost one leg to cancer, Fox attempted to run across the country to raise money for cancer research. He made it 143 days and 5,373 kilometres before cancer finally caught up with him. But not before capturing the imagination of the world and becoming a national treasure.

Now that the Bank of Canada has announced the shortlist, it will now be up to the MInister to make the final decision. But that doesn't mean Canadians can't take to social media to advocate for their choice.

A final decision will be made in the coming weeks.
