Hardwood Ski & Bike trail running series kickoff set for May 25

Six-event series includes the popular Halloween Hustle and Ugly Sweater Run

The Hardwood Ski & Bike trail running series gets underway this week with the first of six events slated for May 25 at their lush forested acreage on the Oro moraine near Barrie, ON.

Hardwood is known for being one of the best places around for cross-country skiing and mountain biking and was the host site for the mountain biking events at the 2015 Pan Am Games,  but the trail running series began four years ago and has become a very popular addition.

“We started with the Halloween Hustle race four years ago, and it was such a great turnout so we got really excited about it,” says Louise “It’s a natural fit here, and we thought, well, people want this in the area, so let’s grow it into a series.”

This season, the number of races has dropped from eight to six. And, each event will have its own charity partner.

“We donate $5 from every entry to whichever charity it is that month,” says Jackson. Some of the charities include the local SPCA and the Season’s Centre for Grieving Children.

The series kicks off May 25 and allows for participants to sign up for each event and accumulate points towards an overall championship. Most races have 5K or 10K options as well as a shorter race for kids with the September event going big with a 7K and a 21K. They still run the fun Halloween Hustle each October, and the series finale is the venerable Ugly Sweater Run in November.

For families that like to run together, kids can compete for free on the kickoff day, May 25, when there will also be an open house for Hardwood’s summer camp programs.

Hardwood is known for its stunning trails that wind their way through the beautiful property.

“It’s unique terrain, and it’s very hilly,” says Jackson. “That’s why it’s actually such a great spot. It’s right in the middle of the country surrounded by flat farm fields.”

And Hardwood has many years of event experience, so you know there will be great prizes, such as Salomon running shoes and sunglasses, as well as onsite physio and really anything one might require to make the most of the day. In addition, if entrants sign up for the entire season, a trail running pass for the entire season can be added for just $10.

Once you’ve run on some of the over 100 kilometres of trails available, you will want to come back again and again.
