Elit Athletes heading to Whistler for the Whistler Half Marathon
Past Champions Jones, Jackson, Nelson, Finlayson at core of stacked elite squad
Whistler, BC – Canada’s most scenic half marathon and 10km are preparing to host some of the provinces best runners in both the men’s and ladies events on June 6th. With more than 1,500 athletes already registered for the weekend’s events, all athletes crossing the finish line will have won their own personal race just by completing the 5th annual running of the event, but the race at the front of the pack will be a crowd-pleaser for sure.
Elite runners from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island will make the trip to Whistler to battle it out for the bragging rights of winner, possible course record holder, and a $1,600 prize purse. In the half marathon distance they will be competing to have their name added to the Prior Award, the unique perpetual trophy (a pair of Prior Skis) honoring the winners of each year’s race. In the 10km race, runners will be looking to have their name placed on the champion’s trophies.
Elite athletes attending this year include past champions from the half marathon and 10km distances, in fact Catrin Jones currently holds the ladies fasted recorded times on both the half marathon and 10km courses. “I am thrilled to see so many of the provinces fastest and most awarded runners joining us here again. We have elite runners coming from Vancouver, Gibsons, Victoria, Abbotsford, Calgary, and Oklahoma” says Dave Clark, the events race director and founder. “Included in that field are winners of events such as the Victoria Marathon, Vancouver Marathon, as well as past Canadian champions” adds Clark.
