Burn off holiday calories at the 95th annual Boxing Day 10 mile run and 4 mile walk/run in Hamilton, ON

I don’t know about you, but once the presents have been opened, the turkey dinner consumed and the holiday baking sufficiently indulged in on Christmas day, I’m ready to break free of slothdom. And what better way to get moving and burn off those Christmas calories than by registering for a Boxing Day run?

The 95th annual Boxing Day 10 mile run and 4 mile walk/run in downtown Hamilton, Ontario is the perfect event to cap off your racing year with. Not only is this historic race known for its excellent organization by the Hamilton Harriers, the pre- and post-race facility at Hamilton Downtown YMCA, and scenic race course (which is a nice mix of roads and trails), but also the sweet snowman medal for all finishers – including a special gold snowman medal for the extra speedy – and an awesome made-in-Ontario snowman-printed neck buff by Niko Apparel to keep your neck, ears and head nice and toasty during outdoor winter activities.

Both events start at noon at the corner of Hughson and Jackson Streets, right beside the Hamilton Downtown YMCA. The scenic course route follows along a paved waterfront trail that loops around the Bayfront Park peninsula (the turnaround point for the 4 milers) before continuing on to Princess Point and the Longwood/Macklin loop. All runners will follow their respective routes back to the finish line, which is located on Hughson Street, just south of King Street.

The package pick-up, race day registration, refreshments and award ceremony takes place inside the gymnasium at the YMCA, where families are welcome to hang out during the event. Change rooms and showers are also available for participants.

Make sure you plan some time to hang around after the event, as there is a $2,000 cash purse prize, age group medals for five-year groups (10 mile race) and 10-year groups (4 mile race), plus a snowman belt buckle for the overall age group winners. Participants and their families are also invited to join in on the post-race social at Slainte Irish Pub, where participants can bring in their race number for a free beverage.

Commit to your post-turkey run plans now by registering online or in person at the Run for the Toad trail race Expo by October 2nd for the lowest rate. Race-day registration is also available during the package pick-up, which opens at 10 a.m. at the YMCA on Boxing Day.
