NHL Hall of Famer and beloved Buffalo Sabre Pat LaFontaine is well known for the feats he accomplished on the ice. Now, he is turning his attention to getting more adults and kids focused on improving their own health by riding their bikes in a festive and safe environment while also raising awareness for his Companions in Courage Foundation.
The Foundation provides funds to build interactive playrooms called Lion’s Dens in hospitals for use by children with life-threatening illnesses. Using innovative communications tools, these rooms replace the isolation of a hospital and provide a connection to family, friends and celebrities during each hospital stay.
“Western New York, the Buffalo Sabres and Sabres’ fans have given me so much, this is a way I can give back,” said LaFontaine, adding, “Everyone can come out, ride with me and the Sabres, while having a great time and getting fit.”
For the event, LaFontaine is partnering with good friend and endurance sporting event pioneer Graham Fraser of Centurion Cycling, which will bring a high quality of production to Pedal with Pat. All Centurion events feature coordinated starts using pace corrals, traffic control by law enforcement so cyclists have the right-of-way throughout, chip timing, technical and medical support, feed zones and a festival-like atmosphere to greet riders at the finish line. Centurion Ellicottville is the third of four events in the 2012 Centurion Cycling series.
