Colon Cancer Canada’s “Push for Your Tush” Walk/Run - Toronto

“Cindy’s Story”

"My brother Steven, 44 years old, father of two girls, Lauren, 16 and Courtney, 14, was always feeling good and never had any problems, except for his diabetes. In December 2009, his energy level felt quite low so he went for some blood tests. His red blood count was below normal, but because my brother had no signs of bleeding, they assumed it was an ulcer. In the middle of January they did both a colonoscopy and gastroscopy. They found a large tumour in my brother's colon. Surgery was approximately two weeks later. My brother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which spread to his liver, lymph nodes, stomach areas and other areas in his body.

In May 2010 we did our first walk for Colon Cancer Canada. May 2011 we did our second and it was an unbelievable experience. My brother Steven showed his strength and courage that day as he did every day throughout this battle, when he checked himself out of the hospital to be with all of us. He refused to miss this event and wanted all of us to be together. Unfortunately, Steven passed away only six weeks after the walk and we have all vowed that we will walk together in 2012 in his memory. We made a commitment to Steven that this will be a walk we do forever. We will find a cure!”

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of both male and female cancer-related deaths in Canada. In 2011 over 22,200 Canadians were diagnosed with colon cancer. Although this is a startling statistic, more startling is the fact that almost half of those diagnosed died. Surprisingly, colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. If caught early, over 90% of these cases could and should result in a full recovery.
